Course Description:  

This course is designed to equip both formal and informal caregivers of individuals with Huntington’s Disease (HD) with the essential knowledge and skills for providing comprehensive care. While each Huntington Academy course focuses on a specific aspect of HD care provision, it’s important to recognize that HD challenges should be approached in a holistic way. As a result, many of the Huntington Academy courses are interconnected, with overlapping content that reinforces a comprehensive approach to care. 

This specific course covers the physiotherapist’s role in designing personalized rehabilitation programs for individuals with HD across all stages, focusing on symptom management, mobility improvement, and quality of life. The course deals with common HD challenges and effective strategies for early intervention, family involvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration, while exploring future trends in HD physiotherapy. 

Course Objectives: 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the physiotherapist’s role in designing and implementing personalized rehabilitation programs for HD

  2. Apply early intervention strategies for prodromal HD

  3. Address challenges in early to mid-stage HD by using personalized physiotherapy

  4. Implement strategies for late-stage HD to improve quality of life and prevent complications

  5. Explore future directions in HD physiotherapy

  6. Identify key features of an expert in HD physiotherapy 

  7. Learn from personal testimonies of HD informal and formal caregivers to gain insight into the human impact of HD and improve care strategies
